Volunteer Programs

Animal Care Volunteer
Animal Care Volunteers work with animal caretakers in their areas assisting in the daily cleaning and disinfecting, diet preparation and distribution, enrichment activities, data collection, and exhibit maintenance. Please note that direct animal contact is limited and is at the discretion of the Zoo Keeper.
Qualifications:
*Serious interest in all animals and their behavior & habits, husbandry, enrichment, training, and conservation.
*Volunteers must be at least 17 years old.
*Be physically fit – must be able to lift 50lbs and be on feet for long periods
*Commitment of at least 4 hours a week for 6 months

Animal Care Intern – Unpaid
Animal Care Interns work with animal caretakers in their areas assisting in the daily cleaning and disinfecting, diet preparation and distribution, enrichment activities, data collection, and exhibit maintenance. In addition, all interns are required to complete and present a project to the staff and attend at least one on-site seminar during their intern term. Project topics may include enrichment studies, animal training, animal behavior/ethograms, etc. Topics must be approved by Zoo Staff. Please note that direct animal contact is limited and is at the discretion of the Zoo Keeper.
Qualifications:
*Serious interest in all animals and their behavior & habits, husbandry, enrichment, training, and conservation.
* Internships are available to undergraduate students, graduate students, and career changers who are pursuing careers in an animal related field. Undergraduates must be at least entering their junior year in college.
*Be physically fit – must be able to lift 50lbs and be on feet for long periods.
*Commitment of a minimum of 2-3 full days(8hours) or 3-4 half days(4hours) per term. More hours are available if needed to meet a school’s intern criteria.
Fall Term: September-December → Application Deadline is July 10
Spring Term: February- May→Application Deadline is December 10
Summer Term: June-August→ Application Deadline is April 10
