Zoological Society Executive Director

The Buttonwood Park Zoological Society (BPZS) is looking for an innovative and experienced professional to provide creative, energetic leadership of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this individual will be responsible for the overall operations of the BPZS and will primarily be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for direct corporate and foundation solicitations, major gifts, in-kind giving, grant and proposal writing and  capital/endowment campaigns.

The Buttonwood Park Zoo is number one family attraction in the South Coast, Massachusetts, and is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). It was established in 1894 and is the 12th oldest zoo in the United States. In the AZA’s 2003 accreditation report, the team of zoo professionals who visited the Zoo called Buttonwood Park Zoo “one of the finest small zoos in the United States.”

The BPZS is a private, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that supports the Zoo by providing funding for educational programming and organizing family events for the community. The Zoo and the BPZS are embarking on an agenda of aggressive redevelopment to better fulfill the Zoo’s mission of conservation, education and providing a great family experience.

We are seeking an individual with a minimum of five years proven management and fundraising experience, including five or more years managing a professional development team, and a demonstrated ability to raise significant corporate, foundation and individual gifts. Experience in the New Bedford area and/or experience working with zoos, aquariums or museums will be considered a strong plus.  Networking in the community will often require working evenings and weekends. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, with excellent communication and leadership skills. The ability to participate in a team-oriented organization and support the BPZS mission and strategic initiatives is critical.
