The Planet Protectors are back in business, and have a lot to do. Our last meeting we talked about potentially getting business cards, ID’s, t-shirts, and/or a Facebook page. We discussed ways of getting more members, and how to sound more “cool”, even though it’s pretty cool to begin with. We most definitely plan on donating to Haiti. Perhaps we will make letters and pictures to send out. In April, on Aha! night, the annual Earth Eve Procession will be run by our Roots & Shoots Group! There are people-powered floats based on climate change, and other environmental issues. We also talked about donating to animal shelters, and putting animals up for adoption online. I’m really happy and excited that we have reunited (and it feels so good, sorry, i had to).

Things have been looking up lately for Hallows Gallows, our upcoming event for this Halloween. (Yay ) For those of you who don’t know, Roots and Shoots will be hosting an event called “Hallows Gallows: The Place to Hang” at the Buttonwood Park Zoo this year. This event will include a Haunted House, a DJ (and Dancing, of course), a Hayride, and even a Costume contest. It’ll be loads of fun. This Sunday, we finally got our flyers pretty much straightened out, and by the middle of this week, they should be ready to give to our anxious audience. A Bunch of my friends have already been asking me for some flyers. Along with that, Alyssa, Cassandra, and I (Nick!) will talk to our Guidance Counselor to try and get permission to put the flyers up around the school, and to even get our event announced on the announcement. Thanks to our lovely supervisor, Ms. Erine (NOT ERNIE) Anderson, we even have a form that might just help us to get our schools’ help. And yes, I did say “schools,” as in plural. Alysha is going to try and get New Bedford High and Fairhaven High to help advertise our event as well, which could add a huge boost to the amount of attendees we will have at the party.

Boo! No, I’m not trying to scare you, I’m talking about Boo At The Zoo. I know, that was the corniest, lamest thing you could ever read, but oh well. Halloween is coming up so I get to be “candy-corny.” Haha, get it? …Okay, I’ll stop. Anyways, Boo at the Zoo. Our members have split into groups and will be setting up a candy table at different nights of Boo at the Zoo, spreading the word of Hallows Gallows as we do so.

Now we just need to get our staffing set up, and then take action. I’m pretty stoked to see how it will go over. And that Haunted house seems pretty cool, too. Can’t wait!

Hey!

We wanted to let you know about some of our activities.

Coming up this Sunday is Elephant Tracks. It is a walk that raises money for the endangered Asian elephant. Our group is going to walk and each of us have agreed to raise twenty dollars or more in donations. We plan to make as much money as we can to help our elephant friends and hope you will help too! Click here for more information about the event.

We are also are also remembering September 11, 2001 that horrible day when terrorist crashed three planes. Two of them crashed into the World Trade Center and one crashed into the Pentagon. It was a very sad day that I am sure no one will ever forget. In remembrance of 9/11 President Obama declared it to be a national day of service in rebranded. To learn more about this click this link: CBC: Honour 9/11 victims through volunteerism: Obama! We had planned to do some community service but sadly we got rained out, and had to reschedule.

I hope you can come to elephant tracks this Sunday- it is at the Buttonwood Park Zoo!

This is the official Roots and Shoots Planet Protector blog. We are based in New Bedford, Massachusetts, at the Buttonwood Park Zoo. We have eight members: Nick, Cole, Tiffany, Cassandra, Adam, Alysha, Alyssa, and the current blogger, Gabi. We also have two adult advisers, Erine and Misty.

A short history of the Roots and Shoots program goes a little like this: Roots and Shoots is an organization started by Dr. Jane Goodall. While at her home in Tanzania, Africa, 16 kids from the village came to her and said that they would like to see change in the way animals were treated in their community. With Dr. Jane’s help, the kids were able to see that the animals were treated with more care and respect. The movement began to grow after that. Kids everywhere started to want to create change in their community. There are now Roots and Shoots groups in over one hundred countries around the entire world. Here is a quote from Dr. Jane on the groups around the world:

Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light, they can break open brick walls. Imagine that the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet. Hundreds of thousands of roots & shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, can break through these walls. We CAN change the world.

- Dr. Jane

We try to do three projects per year. One dealing with social issues, one dealing with environmental issues and one dealing with animal issues. Our projects now include a teen club, a mini-project dealing with elephants and a garden project.

We will be updating this blog about once a week, dealing mainly with our projects and experiences that we have had in the community.

Welcome to the blog, and we hope you enjoy reading!
