The Buttonwood Park Zoo is sad to announce the death of one of its most beloved animal residents, Sandy a 33 year old male Atlantic harbor seal. Sandy was diagnosed with liver disease earlier this fall and has been receiving treatment to assist his condition and manage any discomfort he may have been experiencing. Recognizing that his liver condition would not improve and before his quality of life significantly decreased, the zoo’s animal and veterinary care staff made the difficult decision to euthanize Sandy.
Sandy was found as a stranded pup on Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable, MA in the summer of 1981 and resided at the Buttonwood Park Zoo since 1993. The Buttonwood Park Zoo is home to two additional harbor seals, Blue and Yellow. Atlantic harbor seals can be found along the northern Atlantic coast and have a life expectancy of 25-30 years.
